Maths helps us to measure, organise and make sense of our world. It helps us with planning, designing, problem solving, analysing and managing our day to day world.
In our teaching of Mathematics we aim to promote the understanding of mathematical concepts as well as improve skills. Children should be able to apply mathematical knowledge and understanding in real life situations as well as develop a proficiency in mathematical reasoning and problem solving. Children spend a minimum of one hour per day working on maths in keeping with ‘year group expectations’ and developing their understanding of concepts in number, calculation, shape, space, money, measure, algebra and graphical representation. They are taught to apply increasingly complex skills, vocabulary and strategies to solve problems.
Parents are asked to support with learning in mathematics at home, beginning with simple games and activities and leading to more formal maths homework in Year 2 whereby methods and strategies are laid out to support parents in their understanding.
School has held the ‘Basic Skills Award’ for 10 years. This has recently been updated to the Quality Mark for English and Mathematics, for which we were accredited in February 2019. “The dedicated and inspiring Head Teacher leads a committed staff whose primary purpose is to ensure that all children within the school make the best progress possible.”
